christianity 意思 Contentment Killers

Throughout the book we see the wise teacher of Ecclesiastes lose his
satisfaction. Each time, he encounters and describes a contentment killer.

Our first view of his contentment killed comes in chapter 2, here is verses 15 through 17,

. . . I said in my heart, “What happens to the fool will happen to me also. Why then have I been so very wise?” And I said in my heart that this also is inexplicable. For of the wise as of the fool there is no enduring remembrance, seeing that in the days to come all will have been long forgotten . . . So I hated life . . .
Ecclesiastes 2:15-17

‘Wait a minute!’ he says.
‘I’ve worked my tail off to learn and become knowledgeable and do things wisely. I look around and see a lot of idiots flitting around aimlessly and recklessly. But no one is going to remember me or honor me any more than the idiot. What’s the point!’

In chapter 2:21 we see his contentment killed again,
…sometimes a person who has worked with wisdom and knowledge and skill must leave everything to be enjoyed by someone who did not work for it.
Ecclesiastes 2:21

One of the things I observe a lot is an underlying bitterness in humanity against people who have success, who have wealth, or really have anything admirable. Have you noticed this?

Let’s look as contentment killer number three. In chapter 3 verse16 he writes,

…in the place of justice, even there was wickedness, and in the place of righteousness, even there was evil.
Ecclesiastes 3:16

In chapter 8 verse 14 he says something similar,

There is a vanity that takes place on earth, that there are righteous people to whom it happens according to the deeds of the wicked, and there are wicked people to whom it happens according to the deeds of the righteous. I said that his also is inexplicable.
Ecclesiastes 8:14

Sometimes we start comparing our level of morality to someone else’s.

4th thing that can kill your contentment.
Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to those with knowledge, but time and chance happen to them all.
Ecclesiastes 9:11

Look, if you think that everything happens for a reason but don’t allow any room for the fact that this world is fallen, and part of that fallenness is a meaningless and frustrating reality that can just be senseless and tragic I think you’ll get stuck in the comparison game.

So by now you’ve caught the core of all contentment killers. Comparison.

We’re happy with our home until we go over to their house.
We’re happy with our car until we see what cars they have.
We’re happy with our spouse until we see someone we think no better than us with a better spouse.

How can you kill your contentment killers this week?

Thank God for what you have, don’t consider what others have. Thank God for what is in your hands; don’t think about what is in another’s hands.
