Bluey is a friendly Groper that I came across while snorkelling off Clovelly. I was very surprised and amused when this curious fish kept coming up to my dive mask as if it wanted to play with me. Blue Groper are found in rocky reef areas along the east coast of Australia and are a member of the wrasse family. All blue gropers begin life as females. As they mature, they go through an initial phase, in which they may be male or female, before developing their adult colouring and reaching the terminal phase. Should the dominant male blue groper die, the largest female will grow, change colour and sex, and become the dominant male.
